Who Should Get Varivax

Varivax protects against varicella, the virus that causes chickenpox. The CDC recommends two doses for full protection.

Recommended for:

Children: First dose at 12 through 15 months, second dose at 4 through 6 years.
Adolescents and adults without evidence of immunity: Two doses given 4 to 8 weeks apart.
International travelers, healthcare workers, teachers, and household contacts of immunocompromised people: Two doses required if not previously immune.
Pregnant individuals should not receive Varivax during pregnancy. Susceptible women should be vaccinated after delivery.
Often required for U.S. immigration medical exams and school enrollment.

What Is Chickenpox?

Chickenpox is a highly contagious illness caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It causes an itchy, blister-like rash and fever, and spreads easily through the air or by direct contact. While often mild in children, chickenpox can be serious in infants, adults, pregnant individuals, and people with weakened immune systems, leading to skin infections, pneumonia, or encephalitis. The same virus can also reactivate later in life as shingles.
