Prevnar 20 is a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine. It does not contain live bacteria, so it cannot give you pneumococcal pneumonia. Conjugate vaccines pair proteins with small, inactive pieces of bacteria to train your immune system to recognize them. Prevnar 20 helps protect against 20 strains of pneumococcal bacteria that can cause invasive disease and pneumonia.
The CDC recommends Prevnar 20 for all adults aged 50 and older, and for adults aged 19 to 49 with certain underlying conditions or risk factors such as diabetes, chronic heart, lung, kidney, or liver disease, or smoking.
Prevnar 20 has been studied in adults with chronic conditions.
Even if you received another pneumococcal vaccine before, ask Amy whether Prevnar 20 could add protection.
