Who Should Get MMR

The MMR vaccine protects against measles, mumps, and rubella, three highly contagious viral diseases. The CDC recommends two doses for full protection.

Recommended for:

Children: First dose at 12 through 15 months, second dose at 4 through 6 years.
Adolescents and adults born in 1957 or later without evidence of immunity: one or two doses depending on risk.
International travelers: At least one dose before departure, with infants 6 to 11 months receiving an early dose.
Healthcare workers, college students, and household contacts of immunocompromised people: Two doses required.
Often required for U.S. immigration medical exams and school enrollment.

What Are Measles, Mumps, and Rubella?

Measles causes high fever, rash, and can lead to pneumonia, encephalitis, or death. Mumps causes painful swelling of the salivary glands and can lead to meningitis or hearing loss. Rubella (German measles) is usually mild in children, but during pregnancy it can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, or severe birth defects. All three viruses are highly contagious and spread easily in unvaccinated communities.
